Become a UTSA Group Exercise Instructor

Step 1: Sign up for our Group Fitness Instructor Training (GFIT) course online

Group Fitness Instructor Training (GFIT) is a training course dedicated to teaching you the basic skills needed to become an instructor at UTSA Campus Rec through hands-on experience and lectures.  Over the course of 6 weeks, you will learn how to teach a variety of formats as well as prepare you for the AFAA exam and Group Exercise Auditions.  For more information, email Elizabeth Pavlicek, Program Coordinator for Group Exercise, at elizabeth.pavlicek@utsa.edu.

September 16 - October 21 on Mondays, 4 PM - 6 PM
Attendance of all classes is HIGHLY encouraged.

Step 2: Apply for the UTSA Group Exercise Instructor position.

Step 3: Audition to become a UTSA Group Exercise Instructor

For the audition, you will instruct a 20-minute class: step, kickboxing, or Pilates. If selected, you will begin a 6-8 week shadowing process in 2 formats of your choice for the beginning of the next semester.

Step 4: Obtain your CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.

Step 5: Obtain Primary Group Exercise Certification from AFAA within 90 days of hire.

Become a UTSA Personal Trainer

Step 1: Choose the appropriate certification.

With so many certifications, becoming a Personal Trainer can feel overwhelming and muddled. Below are lists of standard, well-respected certifications accepted at UTSA Campus Recreation. We can pass a $500+ discount to those interested in the NASM certification.

ACE - American Council of Exercise

ACSM - American College of Sports Medicine

NASM - National Academy of Sports Medicine

NSCA - National Strength & Conditioning Association

Step 2: Study & pass your certification exam

Step 3: Apply for the UTSA Personal Trainer position

Step 4: Obtain your CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
