There are four great ways to find out about our trips and clinics.
We’re big fans of the philosophy that life is awarded to those who show up. The only way we have to make sure we are being fair, is to require an in-person sign up process. Trips and clinics can fill up fast so it is best to get in early and sign up. First come, first served!
Insurance is required for attendance on all of our trips. If you do not have current health insurance, Campus Rec has the ability to purchase a policy which covers you for the days of the trip.
Pre-trip meetings are mandatory for most trips. These meetings go over the itinerary, logistics, expectations, and risks of any trip which requires extra preparation on the part of the participant. It's an important part of reducing risk and ensuring participants are informed and well prepared. In most cases, the pre-trip meeting will be held on a Tuesday the week of the trip. Meetings last 45-60 minutes depending on the complexity of the trip. If you are unable to attend the pre-trip meeting, you will not be able to go on the trip. In some cases, an instructor may be able to meet with you outside the scheduled meeting times if their schedule allows.
The Rockwall is located in the Rec Center adjacent to the Membership Services Desk. Check in at the Rockwall desk, sign a waiver, get fitted for shoes and a harness, and receive a brief (10-minute) orientation to the rules and safety procedures. It’s FREE.
You don’t need to know how to climb or have any experience! Our Rockwall instructors will help you get started and offer you a few tips to become a proficient climber. Clinics are offered in movement techniques, belay (holding the rope) techniques, and lead climbing (for advanced climbers). Plus, the Rockwall community is very friendly and knowledgeable; it’s likely you will make some friends who will help you get started right!
Absolutely! Group climbs options are Thursdays 10pm - 12am, Fridays 7pm - 9pm & Saturdays 1pm - 4pm. The climbing area is limited to 15 participants at a time. Larger groups should call to discuss additional facility reservation arrangements to accommodate overflow. Read here for more information on reservation requests.
The Rockwall Staff are passionate about sharing their love of climbing. We offer belay clinics, movement technique clinics, and lead climbing clinics. Two climbing competitions are hosted each year, the Spring Cling in the Spring Semester and Rocktober Fest in the Fall Semester.
Outdoor Pursuits offers an equipment lending program rather than a rental program. Any current Campus Rec Member is eligible to borrow one of each item (exception: paddles and lifejackets) for FREE. Please allow time when picking up equipment to set up and inspect items so you understand how to use it and also so you are not charged for pre-existing damage. Bike and boat check-outs require a one-time orientation before you are able to borrow them.
Patrons who need to borrow the equipment for longer than a week can pay an extended use fee. The fee is very competitive and is based on a charge per day. This extended use fee is only applicable to patrons who have made prior arrangements for this extension before borrowing the equipment. Any patron who has equipment which is late will be charged a late fee.
The orientations are a one-time process that lasts for the duration of your academic career at UTSA and throughout your alumni membership to the Rec Center. Bike orientations last approximately 40 minutes (15 minute safety briefing and a 20-25 minute road/trail ride). Boat orientations last approximately 40 minutes (10 minute safety briefing followed by a 30 minute demonstration on how to rack and strap boats to your vehicle).
We make every effort to ensure you are taking out equipment that is clean and in good repair. Each time we loan out equipment we set it up and inspect it with you to ensure you are not charged for pre-existing problems. Because no one likes that type of surprise, make sure you allot enough time to go through the gear when you pick it up. You will be charged for excessively dirty, wet, or damaged gear you return to us. If the damage is irreparable, you will be charged the cost of replacement and associated shipping. Our goal is to offer top notch equipment so everyone can have the best experiences possible!
