Prior to 1998 – Intramural Sports was the only Campus Recreation-related program and it was managed by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Nevil Shed was the first Intramural Sports Director at UTSA.
June 1998 – First Director of Campus Recreation was hired. At the same time, the Department of Campus Recreation was born. The office was in the University Center. Programming was in the PE Gym & Track Field.
July 2000 – The first Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness was hired.
March 2001 – The first Assistant Director of Intramural Sports joined the team.
July 2002 – The first Associate Director of Operations was hired.
January 2003 – The Rec Center Phase I opened.
April 2004 – The Campus Life Initiative (to increase the Recreation Fee and renovate the Rec Center) passed by more than 2/3 vote. It was an item on the student elections ballot. More students voted in the Campus Life Initiative vote than for any Student Government election up to that date.
June 2004 – Outdoor Pursuits became a program area with the hiring of the first Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits.
January 2005 – The Rockwall in the Rec Center opened. (It’s the tallest collegiate climbing wall in Texas at 54’ tall)
August 2005 – The Downtown Campus Fitness Center opened.
August 2006 – Three (3) new Recreation Fields opened.
February 2007 – The Intramural Field House opened.
May 2007 – The first Assistant Directors in Aquatics and Marketing were hired.
June 2007 – The second Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness was hired, establishing two (2) professional staff that manage the entire programming, staffing and facilities.
August 2007 – A new Campus Recreation logo, inclusive of all six (6) department areas, was launched.
November 2007 – The first Rowdy Rec Run 5K was hosted.
Fall 2007 – Rec Center Phases II and III opened.
January 2008 – The Wellness Suite and Renovations were completed. Outdoor Pursuits hosted their first ski trip.
March 2008 – The outdoor pool, sand volleyball courts and outdoor basketball courts opened.
June 2008 – Intramural Sports and Club Sports positions were split.
October 2008 – Campus Rec hosted the NIRSA Region IV Soccer Tournament.
November 2008 – The 2nd Rowdy Rec Run 5K was hosted in conjunction with family weekend.
February 2009 – Campus Rec hosted the Emerging Recreational Sports Leaders (ERSL) Conference.
March 2009 – Campus Recreation won the Outstanding Facility Award from NIRSA.
August 2009 – Phase I of the Rec Field Complex was completed, which included removal of sidewalks between Fields 1 and 2, as well as relocations of lights.
August 2009 – Hired a Program Coordinator for the Downtown Campus.
October 2009 – Campus Rec hosted the NIRSA Region IV Soccer Tournament.
February 2010 – Campus Rec hosted the NIRSA Regional Intramural Basketball Tournament.
March 2010 – Campus Rec hosted the ERSL Conference.
April 2010 – Received a NIRSA Outstanding Marketing Publication Award (program guide) and Honorable Mention (website design).
April 2010 – Two (2) students (Rachel Dybala and Betty Castillo) both received a NIRSA William Wasson Award.
May 2010 – Rec Field #3 was re-sodded.
August 2010 – The first Graduate Assistants in Intramural Sports and Outdoor Pursuits joined the team.
January 2011 – The Downtown SportsCourt™ was completed.
February 2011 – Campus Rec hosted the NIRSA Regional Intramural Basketball Tournament.
June 2011 – Phase II of the Rec Field Complex 3M Recreation Field renovation to FieldTurf® was completed.
November 2011 – Campus Rec hosted the Association of Outdoor Recreation & Education (AORE) National Conference.
February 2012 – Campus Rec hosted TexFit.
August 2012 – The North and South Entrances were renovated.
August 2012 – A new Campus Recreation logo (in-line with UTSA standards) was launched.
October 2012 – Campus Rec hosted the NIRSA Region IV Conference.
July 2013 – The first Associate Director of Student Development was hired.
February 2014 – Campus Rec hosted the NIRSA Region IV Student Lead On.
April 2014 – Received 3rd place in the NIRSA Creative Excellence Awards for Large Scale Signage.
